A lecture on Christian Public Witness in the context of Casteism in India

DSC08972In the context of injustice and casteism over the Dalits and marginalized community, The department of theology and ethics of the Unite Theological College, Bangalore and the Student Christian Movement of India have together conducted a lecture on the topic “Remembering Ilavarasan, Interrogating Casteism: Re-imagining Christian Public Witness in India” on 22nd July 2013. The lecture was held at the Ziegenbalgh Chapel, UTC, Bangalore. The session was moderated by Rev. Dr. Mohan Larbeer, Secretary, BTESSC. The gatherings were greeted with a warm welcome by Prof. Dr. Sahayadhass. A video depicting the life and death of Ilavarasan was projected by the SCMI staff. Rev. Raj Bharath Patta, General Secretary, SCMI, delivered the lecture. The lecture elaborately explained the role of caste element, the reason behind Ilavarasan’s mysterious death and challenged the community to break the hypocritical silence of caste in the society as well as within the Christian community. The participants consisting of faculty and students of UTC, Goodwill Women’s Christian College and Other local Units of SCM Karnataka Region, were challenged and responded to the lecture, sharing their views and clarifications. A request was made to the SCMI and UTC to conduct more such thought provoking programmes in the future. Vote of thanks was given by Mr. Paul Karunakar. The program concluded with Lord’s Prayer and Benediction by Rev. A. Veronoca.
