Towards a Cross-Cultural Learning: Student Exchange Programme of SCM India to ESG (SCM Germany)

Ten SCMI students accompanied by two senior friends flew to ESG, Bonn, Germany for an exchange program held from 18th to 31st May 2014. The group underwent orientation from 12th to 16th May at SCM House. Thanks to Nora Klein, a German volunteer who introduced some important aspects of Germany as Language, culture, tradition and students lives. These students had their first international trip to experience the lives in Germany with ESG, Bonn students.
The exchange program started on 18th May with the short introduction of SCMI and ESG students moderated by Rev. Michael Pues, the student pastor of ESG-Bonn and the organizer of the exchange program. Around 22 Students from ESG, Bonn accompanied the SCMI students to visit the historic places in Bonn, Koln and Dusseldorf. The historic visited places are Munster Palace built by Romans in 1st century, Gothic structured Koln Cathedral, Carmelites Monastery, Museum established in the memory of Second World War, Karl Marks residence, ancient places now used as educational institutions, Bayer, the world wide medical research center, various industries and other important places.
Besides, we visited to University of Bonn and inquired for the possibilities to study. The admission and scholarship process was well introduced by Ms. Sandra Groeger, the international student adviser of the Bonn University. SCMI and ESG also visited to the University of Applied science, Dusseldorf as well its facility and meet the students and get to know their project and the robotic functions. It was a wonderful experience to attend the lectures at the University of Bonn on Physics and ecumenical studies which was completely deferent than Indian lectures.
Students experienced natural beauty of Bonn, Koln and Rhineland well maintained by the help of people and government as well. Students experienced the “Hiking” at “Drachengels” the Dorgan rock , boating to the Island where Ms. Sabina and Ms. Shinu presented the present scenario of caste system in India and its impact in the society, visit to Seigburg, the country side and visit to a farmer where we were introduced about the modern German technique of farming.
ESG, Bonn arranged the visit to ESG, Dusseldorf where we experienced the worship in Natural landscape rather than surrounded by walls. We met some of the Indian communities in Bonn and Dusseldorf who are working and involve in Church’s ministries. It was pleasure to meet the Indian community and discuss on present scenario of India.
SCMI students landed to Bangalore on 1 June 2015 enriched with immense experiences. We are looking forward to have a group of SCM-Bonn students to come to India in early 2015.
